| I've enjoyed building things every since I got my first toolkit at age 3, on Christmas day 1961. The tool chest at left had real metal saw, which I later used to cut the leg of one of our dining room chairs (thereby making me very unpopular with my mother...).. My brother Mike, then age 6, got the paint-by-number set in the foreground. He is now a successful commercial artist and graphics designer in Boulder, Colorado. |

| In 1992 I received a "Presidental Faculty Fellowship" from the National Science Foundation. The awards ceremony was done in conjunction with the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and included a visit to the White House and a very nice black tie dinner. This photograph was taken shortly before President (George) Bush gave a short address in the Rose Garden. |
| I've participated in the Defense Sciences Study Group (DSSG), A 2-year program sponsored by DARPA to bring selected university faculty members up-to-speed on national security issues. We did a lot of interesting and unusual things. Here I am with Paul Weiss (Penn State University), ready to board a "COD" (Carrier Onboard Delivery). We did a trip-wire landing on the U.S.S. Roosevelt in the Atlantic Ocean, toured the carrier, and then did a catapult takeoff to leave for the mainland. We also visited submarines, drove tanks, and had lots of briefings about issues of importance to defense and national security. |

In 2005 I received the Arthur Adamson Award from the American Chemical Society. This picture shows Bill Carroll, President of the ACS, presenting me with the award at the 2005 national meeting. |
